The Tide of Battle

“The very day I call for help, the tide of battle turns. My enemies flee! This one thing I know; God is for me!” Psalm 56:9 Living Bible

The battle may not be over until the last bullet has been fired … the last soldier has given up … or until the ink dries on the document of surrender.

But the outcome has often been determined long before. Historians tell us that in every major battle in the history of the world, there was a deciding point when the outcome was assured. The tide of the battle turns.

It may be in an obscure location, far from the war’s major players. Possibly on a remote island and a small band of men hold valiantly to their position and against all odds defend it until reinforcements arrive.

In other cases it’s the death of a strategic general whose passing keeps an important element from occurring, thereby sealing victory for the opposition. It’s the turning point of the whole conflict.

There is such a moment for any child of God, and according to the Psalmist, it’s the very day we decide to call out for help to our Heavenly Father. We’re told that from that time until the victory is seen and fully experienced … it is a done deal!
Although not an end to the struggle … not an immediate cessation of opposition … not a white flag waving over the enemy’s encampment, nonetheless the outcome is sealed.

And when asked how he could know such a thing, he smiles and with confidence replies, “It’s because I know that God is for me!”

It may not mark the end of the fighting, but it is the end of the discussion.

May there be joy and victory for your journey!
